How to make a passport-size photo
- Upload a clear portrait. Choose a recent front-facing JPG, PNG or WebP. Good light, a plain background and visible hair/chin give better results. EXIF orientation is read by supported browsers.
- Let the tool frame your face. The face detector suggests position and zoom. If several people are present, the largest face is selected and you can choose another. If the detector cannot load or finds no face, a centre crop is available with manual controls.
- Select the required dimensions. Choose 35 × 45, 35 × 35, 51 × 51, exact 2 × 2 inch, or a custom size. These are dimension presets, not a guarantee of acceptance by a passport or visa authority.
- Check and refine. Drag the photo or use position/zoom controls. Ensure the whole head and required headroom remain visible. Rotate an incorrectly oriented image before auto-framing again. The guide overlay is a visual aid, not a measurement or compliance check.
- Choose image quality. Balanced auto enhancement applies mild tone, colour and sharpness corrections. Original enhancement mode leaves the cropped image unenhanced; choose Original background as well to keep the source background. No mode changes your face shape, clothes or facial features. Background removal runs automatically with light blue selected. You can choose white, grey, a custom colour or Original background. It cannot repair a blurred face.
- Download or print. Download the individual JPG/PNG, download a PDF with repeated copies, or open the print dialog directly. Set copies, paper, margin and gap; extra copies continue on another sheet automatically.
Photo size and real print resolution
At 300 DPI, a 35 × 45 mm photo is approximately 413 × 531 pixels. At 600 DPI it is approximately 827 × 1063 pixels. The downloaded JPG/PNG includes resolution metadata, and sheet PDFs place every photo at its selected physical dimensions. The paper preview is reduced resolution. Higher DPI does not create detail missing from the original image.
For official applications, follow that application’s current photo instructions for size, background, expression, head position and editing. Use Original mode if enhancement is not permitted. For example, the U.S. Department of State publishes its own passport photo requirements; other applications can differ. A plain white original background is preferable when required.
Automatic background removal
A local person-segmentation model first analyses the whole portrait, then analyses a tighter crop for finer subject detail. An image-guided filter aligns the confidence mask with local brightness edges before compositing. These steps can improve boundaries, but do not guarantee perfect removal on every background. The subject mask is reused when you change colour, zoom or crop, so the same result appears in preview, photo downloads, PDF sheets and direct printing. Original comparison shows the unedited background. Uploads default to light blue; your colour choice can then be changed freely.
Use a single-person portrait with clear hair and shoulder edges. Segmentation may retain nearby people and can miss fine hair or transparent accessories. If removal fails, downloads in removal mode stay disabled until a mask is ready; choosing Original background lets you continue without pretending the background was removed. Official applications may restrict background replacement or enhancement—follow their requirements.
How automatic enhancement works
Auto enhancement measures the crop’s average tone and colour, applies limited correction and a light sharpness adjustment. It cannot recover an out-of-focus photo, missing head edges or overexposed details. Compare with Original and reduce the sliders if the result looks unnatural. The tool does not add or reconstruct identity details.
Privacy and browser support
The photo editor processes image pixels in your browser rather than uploading the photo to an editing server. Public MediaPipe face-detection and person-segmentation models load from external hosts. The site’s existing analytics, advertising and other resources remain. Internet access is needed for these dependencies; manual framing remains available if the face model is blocked. If background removal is blocked, choose Original background to continue or retry after checking the connection. Clear the photo after using a shared computer.
Supported inputs are JPG, PNG and WebP up to 15 MB and 40 megapixels. Very large images are resized internally to a maximum edge of 4096 pixels to limit memory. Export does not copy the source file’s EXIF/GPS metadata. Browsers and printers may scale differently: check the first print with a ruler and use Actual size / 100%.
Common questions
Is the photo ready automatically after uploading?
Yes, the tool prepares a crop and applies the selected enhancement mode. With a detected face it uses face-based framing. You must still review the result and the application’s requirements.
Can I print several copies on one A4?
Yes. Select the number of copies and A4 paper. The tool fills rows from the top and creates more sheets when needed. You can also select 4 × 6 or 5 × 7 inch photo paper.
Can I remove the background and choose another colour?
Yes. Every new upload defaults to automatic background removal with light blue (#cfe8ff). Choose white, grey or a custom colour, or select Original background to turn removal off. Edge refinement and Erase/Restore brushes can improve the visible boundary, but complex hair, blur and objects near the subject may leave errors. Restore uses original pixels; it does not invent missing hair. Inspect the result before use.
Why does a small photo still look blurry at 600 DPI?
Increasing export pixels does not restore missing source detail. Use the clearest original camera photo available. The preview shows an estimate of the effective source resolution at your selected print size.
